Postpartum Tips:

  • Rest as much as possible. In Eastern cultures, traditionally women don’t leave the house or do housework for 3 months after delivery. They are catered to as they stay in bed and tend to the baby. Properly recovering from pregnancy and delivery is important for your long-term health and to avoid secondary infertility issues. Please don’t feel pressure to get back in shape and exercise immediately. Give it 3-6 months. Gentle walks and stretching are acceptable.
  • Foods – Eat warm nourishing soups like the Postpartum Recovery recipe on this page. It includes herbs that can help you recover. Eat organic red meat, bone broth, easily digestible grains like barley, cooked leafy greens, plenty of protein (animal protein preferred) and healthy fats. Drink loads of water adding a pinch of sea salt and squeeze of lemon for additional electrolytes. ***How well you eat and rest following during these months can affect your long-term fertility.
  • Stay warm – Keep you feet, low abdomen and low back warm. Your uterus is healing and is particularly vulnerable and open. By keeping these areas warm, you’re preventing cold from lodging in your reproductive organs.
  • Postpartum issues – If you have issues like retaining the placenta, postpartum depression, weakness from blood loss following hemorrhage or other complications, make an appointment with your local acupuncturist. He or she can help with both acupuncture and Chinese herbs to make a healthy recovery.
  • Prepare your placenta – I know it sounds weird, but it’s been used for ages medically by the Chinese. Hire a local doula or acupuncturist to prepare your placenta as a tincture or encapsulated for postpartum recovery. This is a powerful herb and very effective at preventing and/or treating postpartum depression, stabilizing the hormones, and general recovery from pregnancy and delivery.
